When people keep repeating
That you'll never fall in love
I can't find much wrong with Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend playing the blues.
I can hear you knockin'.
All the way from a surfing beach in Hawaii...
Jesus, I love that song.
I can hear you knockin'.
All the way from a surfing beach in Hawaii...
Jesus, I love that song.

The Who is one band that never "clicked" for me, but I know the problem is with me so I fully expect to see the light on them someday. Hopefully pretty quick. I think it's just because of hearing stuff off of Who's Next way too many times on classic rock radio. I loved the movie Quadrophenia with all the mod British stuff.
I have the Live At Leeds album, and am going to go dig it out now from my crates in the closet. I have Who's Next somewhere too but I think it is all scratched to hell. I'm on a strict no cd no MP3 kick lately. Started buying vinyl in the mid 80s and never stopped but have a LOT of shitty shitty new-wavey stuff that sounds ridiculous now.
I'm going to change my mind hopefully on the Beatles also. Again, classic rock radio ruined them for me. I picked up a used copy of Revolver and have been warming to it lately. The good songs are mostly the ones that don't get played on the radio, and I never gave the Beatles a chance so I never listened to anything except the two I have, Abbey Road (which I grudgingly agree is great) and the White Album. I'm on the hunt for a good used vinyl copy of Rubber Soul and Let It Be.
I don't think I can get into Paul McCartney's songs though, he seems like a wishy-washy nice guy with no edge to him and I cannot listen to stuff like Good Day Sunshine or any other of his lovey-dovey songs.
And while we're on it, Clapton is another one I know I have to try harder on. I can dig Cream and I can dig the Bluesbreakers stuff he did with Mayall, his solo stuff is just so laid back it's like listening to a J.J. Cale album.
I know he can blast, songs like Badge and some off Layla are great when he lets it rip, the only Clapton I have are Backless and Slowhand and I keep waiting for him to let it rip and he doesn't do it much.
My plan on Clapton is that my friend John owns a sweet used vinyl record store in MPLS called Roadrunner Records and he keeps a "wanted list" behind the counter of things people he knows want, and when the wanted stuff comes in he calls or e-mails us. I've got a running list with him and I will have him hold used copies of what I think the best Clapton and Who and Beatles albums are as they come in.
It's great to have a friend in the used vinyl business, although it gets spendy. Certain odd things haven't been reissued much so they demand high prices. I've gotten A+ condition copies of every Stones album from Her Majesties Satanic Request to Tattoo You from him but some Stones stuff is hard to find in A+ condition because Jagger and Richards are in a constant dispute with the record labels over rights and money. Even the cheapest A+ vinyl Stones records from their hot period are hard to find and the clunkers like It's Only Rock and Roll and Love You Live go for $12.00-$25.00.
The good stuff like Sticky Fingers (I paid $29.00 for one in only average condition, but with the real zipper) is way high priced, and Exile is almost impossible to find in good condition.
The only Stones vinyl I don't have from their hot streak are Exile and Black and Blue. The next copy of Exile (with original booklet and post cards) that comes through my friend John's store has a bunch of people wanting it so he's going to take bids on it. I'm not going to win the bid because used copies of Exile in A+ condition go for over $100.00, and I can't afford that. I just have to keep hunting for that one and hope to luck out.
The good news from record collecting land is that the Neil Young archives are now rolling out on vinyl, and sound FUCKING FANTASTIC, and are somewhat reasonably priced.
And although I have not bought any of it yet, thanks to Pearl Jam for offering limited editions of vinyl with each release at DIRT CHEAP prices, less than CDs new.
Too bad the prices get jacked up into the $30.00 range as soon as the pressing runs run out.
What can I talk about next here? Beefheart? Van Morrison's Astral Weeks? I'm a Velvet Underground/Lou Reed freak so I could go on ALL DAY about them.
Captain Beefheart...now there's a name from the past!
